Celebrating Founder’s Day in 2025 and 2026

Irene Hui (’71)

It is amazing that I was able to return from Toronto to celebrate Founder’s Day two years in a row, to witness the milestone 125th anniversary of our school in 2025, and the 100th anniversary of the Kindergarten Block in 2026.

The Silcocks Hall

It is indeed a magical experience to have fond memories of our high school years brought back vividly to this new campus with so many modern facilities. I always miss the old Silcocks’ Hall! It has been the anchor of our education in Ying Wa outside of the classroom. Highlights there included Christmas Carol Singing, teachers’ performance at the Christmas Variety Show, and students singing《踏雪尋梅》one year.

I could also clearly remember that Rev. C.C. Lee would sometimes crack a joke during the otherwise solemn morning assemblies at the Silcocks Hall. These are indelible learning opportunities that had influenced us quietly. Her sermons on stage were amongst the most eagerly anticipated moments for a lot of us throughout our school days.

The 2026 Founder’s Day Service on March 28 was held in the Silcocks Hall, followed by a buffet lunch there organized by the Alumnae Association (AA). I heard the lunch tickets for the 26 tables were all snatched up within a short time. Well done!

Our Young Sisters

I am also very impressed with our young sisters who are so all-round. At the ceremony to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Kindergarten Block, the Chinese dance performed by the students was excellent. A student’s beautiful solo guzheng (古箏) recital also won a big round of applause from the audience. Our young sisters are so talented.

In mid-February 2026, our students ran a stall at the Lunar New Year Fair at the Victoria Park in Causeway Bay. This was their first ever attempt and definitely a truly remarkable success. I was lucky to have gone early on the opening day, and got to purchase souvenirs for my classmates in Toronto. The stall was packed with enthusiastic supporters. The bestsellers sold out fast!! The students were green in handling such a huge volume of business, but they did a terrific job!

From Toronto with love 身遠心莫離

Though we are far away in Toronto, our hearts have never left.

Class of 1971 in Toronto always welcomes teachers and classmates from near and afar to join our gatherings: Hong Kong, Sarnia, Hawaii, San Francisco, Vancouver, Calgary, and hopefully even more in the future. We follow the news of Ying Wa closely, and I was asked by classmates to bring back to Toronto 13 hoodies designed by the AA this year! We all find them comfortable, fitting well, and stylish.

Next time I visit Hong Kong, I would love to go take a look at the basketball court. Congratulations to the Basketball Team of Ying Wa on their achievement!

Proud to be a Ying Wa girl!
